Winter Weather Update for January 18 - 21, 2024

❄️ WEATHER UPDATE ❄️

Here is the latest information from US National Weather Service Huntsville Alabama regarding the forecast for the rest of this week.

While temperatures are expected to rise above freezing in the late morning today, there is a chance for light rain to move into the area this afternoon and evening. This, combined with another drop in temperatures, will make travel hazardous. Customers are advised to monitor local media and law enforcement for road conditions.

Temperatures will be dangerously cold this weekend, with wind chills of -3 on Saturday and -1 on Sunday (though temperatures are expected to eventually rise above freezing on Sunday).

When it comes to extreme cold, remember:

Heating is the largest portion of your energy use in winter. Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable to limit energy use.

If you use space heaters, keep them away from combustible materials, plug them directly into the wall (not a power strip or extension cord), and don't leave them unattended.

Let faucets drip to protect pipes from freezing and open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can circulate around pipes.

If your pipes freeze, turn the water off at the main valve. Thaw the pipes with a hair dryer or space heater.

When pipes thaw, turn the water on slowly and check for leaks or cracks.

Be sure to check on elderly family members/neighbors and protect your pets!

Huntsville Utilities continues to monitor all systems during the current weather situation. All crews remain on call and are responding to service issues caused by high demand due to very cold temperatures across the Tennessee Valley.

Huntsville Utilities will not interrupt service for non-payment until temperatures moderate. We also realize that the suspension of local mail service means some customers will not receive their bills in a timely manner. While the details are still being discussed, customers affected will not be charged fees for late payment.

To report a power outage or other service interruption, call 256-53-LIGHT (256-535-4448).

Customers are advised to monitor local media and the National Weather Service (weather.gov/hun) for updates on the upcoming winter weather forecast.
