Add/Modify/Remove Services

Electric overhead and underground Illustration Do you currently have overhead electric service but you'd like to switch your service to under ground?

We can do that!
In late 2020 Huntsville Utilities began the process of converting many of the city street lights over to LED technology.
This change has allowed for better visibility and a whiter color quality to the lights. Check out more information about this exciting change happening in your community in the Education Section of our website.

Do you already have utility service with Huntsville Utilities but you'd like something changed?

Do you wish to have a water irrigation (sprinkler) meter added?

Sprinkler Services Form
Irrigation/Sprinkler Meter Information
A sprinkler meter is used to eliminate sewer charges for water used for lawn watering. There are two ways of getting a sprinkler meter installed.

  1. The first and most common is an extra stub, which costs less.

  2. The second is a new tap.

EXTRA STUB – Irrigation/Sprinkler Meter

  •  Installation of a tee connection in the service line directly in front of the meter on the street side and the installation of another meter immediately adjacent to the domestic meter.

  • While both meters are connected through the same line and a pressure drop may be noticeable inside the house when running lawn sprinklers, most people choose this option and schedule their lawn sprinkling at times when inside use is minimal.

The standard service line is a 1” plastic (Polyethylene) line. Older services may be 3⁄4” or 1” galvanized, and will be replaced with a new 1” PE line automatically at no cost to the customer, whenever an extra stub is requested.

NEW TAP – Irrigation/Sprinkler Meter

  • Connected to the water main through an entirely separate service line.

  • This option will come with a 1" irrigation meter only.

  • The customer will need to stake the location for the new meter.

  • Typically large sprinkler system installations or installations where the existing meter location is undesirable for connecting to the sprinkler system may require separate taps.

  • Important Note: Huntsville Utilities will install sprinkler meters with a back flow prevention device and meters will be left in the unlocked position. A plumber must then tie the meter into an irrigation system or install a spigot at the meter for water access.

  • Typical flow rates available from a 1" service line range from 20 to 60 gallons per minute, depending upon pressures and length of line (from main to meter). Static pressure at individual services is entirely a function of location and elevation and cannot be changed by Huntsville Utilities. In lower pressure areas (generally higher elevations, such as the tops of hills etc.), a larger service line or private booster pump may be needed in order to provide significantly increased flows.

  • If you have questions regarding flows and pressures in your area, contact Engineering Services at 535-1315.

  • Once the sprinkler meter is set by Huntsville Utilities the customer will be billed an availability charge each month based on the size of the meter.

*03/29/05 - Sewer Rates Per City of Huntsville Ordinance: Any single family residence served by more than a single water meter will be billed at a rate greater than a single family residence served by one water meter.

Do you wish to have Natural Gas Service added to your account?

Natural Gas Service Territory Map (coming soon)

If these services are available to connect to the location and will be associated with an existing Huntsville Utilities account, then the only charges will be the tap fees.  If service is not available then Engineering will contact you to discuss how services can be made available, which may require a non-refundable Contribution-In-Aide to-Construction (CIAC) payment and/or additional deposits.

Do you wish to obtain electric service to a new structure or modify services to an existing structure?

Steps for getting service to a new building or changing/relocating/upgrading service to an existing building have many of the same requirements.

You may submit a Construction Services Form to begin this process or call 256-535-1315. One of our Engineering Services representatives will review the information and contact you to discuss options for altering your existing service.  So that we may be better prepared to assist with your plans, please provide as much detail regarding your project, including the location, as possible.

In order to properly plan services for your project, the following conditions may need to be fulfilled:

  • General description of the project including location, site layout, desired location of utilities, and anticipated loads.
  • DO NOT assume that utilities are readily available. In MOST cases utilities can be made available with reasonable construction, but this is not always the case.
  • A non-refundable Contribution-In-Aid to-Construction (CIAC) payment may be required before the construction can begin. This is in addition to any service application fees or deposits due at the time you apply for an account with Huntsville Utilities.
  • Stake the location of the new meter location
  • Roughly stake the corners of the new building or addition
  • Provide the new total load requirements for the services requested
  • Indicate if there will be gas heating to the development
  • Indicate street light requirements. Street lights are governed by the local government entity, and requirements vary depending on the jurisdiction of the location.  For a list of contacts to determine the street light requirements for you project and to request the installation of a new streetlight, click here for a new street light.

An Engineering Services representative will contact you to discuss these details and provide  clarification of these or any additional requirements.

Do you wish to turn off your meters temporarily?

Are you going on vacation or taking an extended trip? Huntsville Utilities customers may turn off their gas and water meters as well as their electric breaker in order to temporarily stop service.

By cutting off your meter(s) and turning off the main breaker in your home, you will only be charged the standard availability charge (no consumption). If turned off properly and completely there will be no consumption.

Electric
Your home's breaker box can be switched to OFF to stop electric use within your home.

Water

Water Shut-off Valve

Cut-off Valve
This is a quarter turn valve. Turn the valve such that the top is in line with the meter and se

rvice line for ‘ON’. For ‘OFF’, turn the valve across the service line (with the locking ears aligned).

Leak Indicator
If you suspect you have a leak, make sure everything is turned off then watch this small triangle to determine if water is going through the meter. Even the smallest leak or flow of water through the meter will cause this indicator to turn, often when no movement is visible on the large dial.

GasGas Shut-off Valve

Each natural gas meter assembly includes a valve so the gas supply can be shut off from the outside before it enters the meter. This shut off valve is located just above the ground and before the meter. The shut off valve has a raised indicator to show the position of the valve. If the raised portion of the valve is in-line with the pipe as shown, the valve is in the open position and gas will flow through the meter. To shut off the supply of gas, turn the valve so the indicator is perpendicular to the piping as shown. This will prevent any gas from passing through the meter.

In case of a leak inside the house, this shut off can be used to prevent any gas from entering the house. If a leak is suspected, call the Gas Service Department at 256-650-6342 Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 3:00 pm. Otherwise call Huntsville Utilities Dispatcher at 256-535-1200, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
