Winter Weather Update for Mon - Tue (Jan 15-16, 2024)
A winter weather system bringing snow and dangerously cold temperatures is expected for the Huntsville Utilities service area.
The timing window is 8pm Sunday evening through 3am Tuesday morning.
Snow totals for the Huntsville Utilities service area are currently forecast for 2 inches. There is a small chance of up to 0.1 inch of ice (less than a 20% chance).
This coldest temperatures are expected Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will be mid to upper teens with wind chills near or just below 0 on Tuesday morning. Wednesday morning's temperatures will be in the low single digits with wind chills of -4 to -10. Temperatures will not get above freezing until late Thursday morning.
To control your energy use during extreme cold, please remember the following:
Set your thermostat to as low a temperature as is comfortable (do not endanger your health)
Set ceiling fans to clockwise to circulate the warm air
Close fireplace damper if fireplace is not in use
Dress warm
Let the sun in through the windows to warm your home, but close curtains and blinds at night
Check for drafts around doors and windows and seal them
Make sure air vents are not blocked
Shut doors to rooms you aren't using
Put extra blankets on your bed
Place area rugs on hard floors
Cold weather can also cause pipes to freeze or burst. To prevent this:
Make sure sprinkler systems are turned off and drained
Disconnect water hoses on the outside of your home
Wrap exposed pipes in insulation
Open cabinet doors under sinks to let the warmer room air in
Let faucets drip to keep water moving through the pipes
If your pipes do freeze:
Shut off the water at the main valve immediately
Thaw pipes with a hair dryer or space heater (do not leave space heaters unattended)
Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check for cracks or leaks
