TVA Retires Bull Run Fossil Plant

From TVA:

On December 1, 2023, Bull Run Fossil Plant retired after 56 years of operation. This decision is part of TVA’s transition to a cleaner energy future. Bull Run Fossil Plant was taken offline for the last time after successfully burning the remaining coal onsite on August 17, 2023.

TVA’s only single-unit coal plant, located in the Claxton community in Anderson County, Tennessee, Bull Run was originally designed to produce up to 950 megawatts. When Bull Run Fossil Plant was built in 1967, it was the largest in the world in the volume of steam produced.

The employees of Bull Run have built a legacy that will endure. Their dedication and service to the mission of TVA and the local community is evident over the years. Their willingness to be flexible as we adjust our generating portfolio to align with power system needs is to be commended. A transitional employee team will remain at Bull Run Fossil throughout FY24 to help with decommissioning efforts.
