Weather Alert for Monday Night Into Tuesday Morning (November 20-21, 2023)

Here is the latest information from the National Weather Service regarding the wind/storm threat for Monday night/Tuesday morning:

There is a low chance of strong to severe storms impacting portions of the Tennessee Valley this evening into early Tuesday morning bringing the following threats:
Gusty to damaging winds (high confidence)
Heavy rainfall/localized flooding (medium confidence)
Frequent lightning (medium confidence)
A tornado (very low confidence)
There is high confidence that wind gusts will reach 40-50 mph tonight into Tuesday morning, even in areas where storms are not occurring (non-thunderstorm wind gusts).

A Wind Advisory is in effect from 6 PM this evening through 6 AM Tuesday morning for northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee due to sustained winds between 20-30 mph and gusts up to 40-50 mph. After the Wind Advisory is set to expire (6AM), there is a potential for lingering wind gusts up to 25-30 mph, especially in northeast AL and southern middle TN as well as higher elevations.

For the Huntsville Utilities service area, the timing for these storms is 9pm Monday to 1am Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville is forecasting a low chance of strong to severe storms Monday evening through Tuesday morning for all of northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.


The primary threats are gusty to damaging winds, heavy rainfall/flooding, frequent lightning, and a low chance of a tornado. 

The most severe threat is primarily for locations near and west of the I-65 corridor or northwest and north central Alabama. 

Wind gusts of up to 60mph are possible, and a wind advisory is in effect from 6pm Monday evening through 6am Tuesday morning. 

This type of weather event brings an increased risk of limbs, trees, and debris blowing into and bringing down power lines, leading to power outages. If you see a downed or obstructed power line, do not approach it or attempt to remove the obstruction. Call us immediately at 256-53-LIGHT (256-535-4448). This is also the number to call to report a power outage. 

Huntsville Utilities is closely monitoring the weather situation and is standing by to respond to any service issues. Customers are advised to monitor local media and the National Weather Service website (www.weather.gov/hun) for updates throughout the day.
