Huntsville Utilities Asks For Voluntary Water Conservation On Green Mountain

NEWS RELEASE – HUNTSVILLE UTILITIES
HUNTSVILLE UTILITIES ASKS FOR VOLUNTARY WATER CONSERVATION ON GREEN MOUNTAIN
Tuesday – June 20, 2023

Huntsville Utilities is asking the 600 water customers of Green Mountain in South Huntsville to take voluntary water conservation measures effective immediately and until further notice.

This request is necessary due to high-water consumption in the area coupled with the constrained infrastructure caused by the elevation of Green Mountain. The continued residential growth in this area is also leading to strain on the current pumping and storage capacities. Huntsville Utilities began the process of expanding the water supply infrastructure on Green Mountain in 2022; however, this work will not be complete until the summer of 2025.

There are many simple steps residents can take to limit their water use, but the most effective is to reduce lawn and landscape watering to every other day. You should also make sure your sprinkler system is not running on rainy days, and only water your yard during the cooler portions of the morning or evening. Additionally, dishwashers and clothes washers should only be run with full loads. There is also a library of videos on water conservation on the Huntsville Utilities YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/@HuntsvilleUtilities).

While the City of Huntsville does have a Water Conservation Plan that does allow for mandatory water reduction by customers, it is hoped that this request for voluntary reduction will bring the necessary relief to prevent mandatory reductions.

This request does not apply to any other part of the Huntsville Utilities service area. We will continue to monitor and assess the water consumption on Green Mountain and will notify residents if additional steps are required.

We appreciate the cooperation of the residents impacted by the request.
